OneVoice Barn Party

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

On Sunday, October 11th, OneVoice and friends gathered in Dr. Carl Ruby’s barn for an evening of worship, food, and fellowship.  Dr. Ruby is our Vice President of Student Life and it was his idea to have this annual gathering for the choir.  Honestly, I thought it would be hard to top last years’ experience but God showed up in a mighty way!

After enjoying pizza, chicken wings, donuts and apple cider, the band and members of ensemble began to lead our time of worship.  It was just like a rehearsal, except we were outside and surrounded by friends of the choir.1vc10_185

I played percussion and sang soprano in the ensemble. It was awesome to look out into the crowd and see everyone truly worshipping in spirit and in truth. People from different cultures and backgrounds were gathered together praising the Lord in their own way; some jumping, others crying, some kneeling, others with hands in the air…the way the Body of Christ is supposed to look.1vc10_188

After we sang a few worship songs, we had a time of prayer. We split up into groups of four or five and prayed over each other and the ministry of the choir. This was probably my favorite part of the evening because it allowed us to really get to know each other. With a choir as big as OneVoice it’s easy to go four years without really knowing many people. But, it’s during these times, that you can get to know people and connect with them in prayer.1vc10_181

That’s why I love OneVoice, we are so much more than a choir, we are a family

Our First Chapel!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

After several weeks of rehearsal, we had our first opportunity to lead worship in chapel this past Tuesday! Unveiling our look for the year, the risers were filled with festive reds, browns and oranges almost in a welcome to the chill, fall weather that almost simultaneously hit Cedarville. The choir, about 120 members strong showed up and packed the DMC chapel stage ready to worship bright and early.

First Chapel

We started out by introducing a new, very powerful song called “Healer” that has really become a favorite of many in the choir.

“You hold my every moment, You calm my raging seas.
You walk with me through fire, And heal all my disease.
I trust in You. I believe Youre my healer.
I believe You are all I need, I believe Youre my portion.
I believe Youre more than enough for me,
Jesus, Youre all I need”

With the realization that He truly fulfills any and every need, we transitioned into the more familiar song “Enough” praising Him for taking care of every thirst and every need. My favorite lyric of that song is “..You’re my everything, Still more awesome than I know.” It gets me everytime. As much as we can recognize the power and majesty of our Lord, He is still so much more than we can even comprehend. That is just an awesome thought to me.

The student body, the faculty and staff present, and the speaker, Clark Kellogg all joined in singing with us and made OneVoice’s first appearance in chapel a great time of reverence.

The choir this year has been working so hard and so faithfully to learn and retain music for our ministry opportunities this year in chapel, campus concerts, and community involvement. This was a great, encouraging kick-off, and it has gotten us even more excited for more ministry to come!

Secrets, Suspense, and Celebrations

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
Friday was a nerve-racking day. I couldn’t wait for the morning to be over – the suspense was too much!

Each year, Cedarville University’s alumni relations office gives an award to a staff member who has significantly impacted the lives of students. This year’s recipient was Justin Spann, director of OneVoice Gospel Choir. During homecoming weekend at alumni chapel, Justin was to be honored briefly for receiving this award.

Can you keep a secret?

We did! While receiving this award was a great honor to begin with, we wanted Justin to feel extra special and know what an impact he’s made in the lives of hundreds of OneVoice members. I worked with the alumni relations office to have OneVoice sing a song in alumni chapel without Justin knowing. It took some planning and being extra careful to not let something slip. We invited current, former, and graduated choir members to come back to participate. Justin’s been one of my best friends for a few years and I’ll admit that it is tough to keep a secret from him – especially of this magnitude!hc_10_130

The secret worked. During the alumni chapel on Friday, OneVoice entered the chapel from backstage and filled all the risers. There must have been 100 total! It was an incredible showing to honor Justin and a lot of fun to see OneVoice alumni singing in the choir and playing in the band alongside current students. We invited him to the platform to direct “Lord You Are Good,” a old favorite of Cedarville’s gospel choirs throughout the years. He was shocked, speechless, and overcome. It was amazing

Following chapel, we hosted a luncheon to honor him. All the former choir members and a lot of current members enjoyed fellowship and food together. Friday’s events were the highlight of the weekend, not just for Justin, but for me. He’s been an amazing friend and leader of OneVoice. We all give God praise for what He’s done through Justin and OneVoice. It’s an incredible ministry that is so essential to the Cedarville family.

Rejoicing,
