The start of the 2023-24 exhibition season at The 220 Gallery, the on-campus Cedarville art exhibition space, opened with Fertile Ground. The exhibition featured the artistic work of Cedarville Studio Art Alumni, spotlighting ten artist alumni over a range of fifteen years, the most recent alumnus being one of our 2023 graduates. The lively exhibition showcased a wide array of media, including painting, ceramics, drawing, and printmaking.

Fertile Ground was on view from August 29th to October 16th, 2023. The premise of the exhibition flowed from the question, “How do we make things grow?”

An experienced farmer knows that well-cultivated soil is essential for a good crop, and that good soil comes from the cycles of life before it: crops rotated, earth tilled, dirt full of microorganisms and nutrients. Recalling Christ’s words in Matthew 13, good soil allows for deep roots, for protection from birds and thorns, and for a rich environment where a seed comes alive.

Cedarville’s Studio Art Department is rooted in rich soil, cultivated by the artists who contributed to and shaped our program: the truth seekers, wrestlers, rejoicers, lamenters, illuminators; the witnesses through art to creation, fall, and redemption.  The cumulation of artworks in Fertile Ground reflects, celebrates, and honors that legacy
