Every year, Cedarville University\u2019s Writing Center hosts writing contests to celebrate the National Day of Writing in the fall and International Poetry Day in the spring.<\/p>\n
In fall 2022, writers from Cedarville\u2019s Writing Center, along with members of the Inklings Creative Writing organization, announced a creative writing competition with the theme \u201ctransparency.\u201d After weeks of advertising via social media, posters around campus, and a workshop night hosted by the Writing Center, the judges had received many exciting entries. Haley Kollstedt (English) and Grace Thornsbury (English) were runners-up for their works of fiction and poetry. Senior Corrissa Smith (computer science) wrote the winning creative nonfiction piece, called \u201cSea Glass Knives.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the spring 2023 Poetry Competition, Writing Center judges chose the theme \u201cStray Cat\u201d to encourage students to use concrete imagery. Amongst the many fine admissions, the Writing Center declared three runners-up: Brosnan Butt (mechanical engineering), Luke Devenney (computer science), and Corrissa Smith (computer science). The winning poem, \u201cMother Cat,\u201d was written by junior Grace Thornsbury (English).<\/p>\n
The judges were pleased not just with the variety of submissions, but also with the variety of majors represented among the writers who submitted their creative work.
