Public Utilities Corp Notification

February 15, 2021

To all Cedarville University Faculty, Staff, and Students,

The Public Utilities Corp. of Ohio (PUCO) requires that we provide you with the following information relative to the University’s natural gas pipeline facilities.

These pipeline facilities are located both underground and above ground within the campus and are used to provide natural gas for the campus. To ensure the natural gas pipeline facilities are safe and reliable, Cedarville University follows a regular operation and maintenance program. In spite of this, potential hazards with the pipeline facilities include leakage caused by deterioration of the facilities over time or outside forces. Cedarville University’s normal operations and maintenance program should address any deterioration of the facilities before they become a leak or a problem. Pipeline leakage caused by outside forces (i.e., digging into the underground pipeline and damaging it) can be prevented by calling Cedarville University maintenance department before any digging, whether planting flowers, installing a signpost, etc., is done within the campus. The maintenance department can be reached at 937-766-7774. We will mark the location of the pipeline facilities with paint and flags and/or show you the location of any underground pipeline facilities in the area you are digging.

If a leak does occur, it is important for you to be able to recognize it. Natural gas cannot be seen or smelled in its normal state; however, the University treats the gas with an odorant that you should be able to smell. Please be alert for these signs of a possible leak:

  • A distinctive odor smelling like “rotten eggs”
  • A shrill blowing or hissing sound
  • Dirt being blown or thrown into the air
  • Bubbles coming from or water being blown into the air at a puddle, pond, creek
  • Fire apparently coming from the ground or burning above the ground
  • Patches of brown vegetation in grassy areas
  • Dry spots in grassy areas

If you suspect a gas leak inside or outside of your building please do the following:

  1. Notify Cedarville University at 999 or 937-239-6491 so the leak can be verified and corrective measures taken.
  2. Avoid open flames or other ignition sources, including operating light switches, operating garage door openers and operating motor vehicles.
  3. Evacuate the area.

Note: The phone number above is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you have any questions or would like additional information regarding Cedarville University’s natural gas pipeline facilities please call 937-766-7937.

Thank you.

Jeff Cunningham
