NEXT STEPS

a family of three meeting with a professor

A family visiting Cedarville University has an impromptu stairwell meeting with Dr. Jason Lee, Chairman of the Bible Department.

Many parents and students ask me, “just how do you pick a school?”

This list is not exhaustive, but could be very helpful in this quest.

#1 Pray to God! You may think this is self-serving and even as a Christian something you have not done often enough, but there is no better time than the present! There is a God. He cares. He guides. I love 1 John 5:14,15 as a reminder of how prayer works. Ask others to pray for you also, and update them on the results!

#2 Involve your parents. You may not see eye to eye with them on everything. That’s ok, you are an individual! I love the realization that even though my children do not see the world at all times the way I see it, they have a valid opinion, worth knowing! This is true for parents too! (somebody say amen!) Keep them as part of the process, regardless of who is paying the school bill!

#3 Visit the School! So much gets answered in a real time visit to the campus. You find out how the student body is doing. You find out how accessible the faculty, staff and administration really is. You find out, not what people tell you about the school, but personally what the school is really about! I have successfully completed many things that people told me I would never like or do! I’m so glad I went for a first-hand account!

#4 Apply Now to the school! While you are waiting for clarity on points 1-3, apply to the school! You may find the answer to your prayers and your parents approval as well as confirmation about visiting all via this process of applying.

I was sharing with someone recently how it “didn’t make sense” from my perspective, that my daughter would attend the university she attended. We didn’t have any funds available for education and frankly I was still paying on my school debt as well as my wife’s school debt. But we did those 4 steps and in the end, the help of family, church, sweat equity and a patient school, she graduated debt free! It’s March, if you have been sitting on the fence about what to do, consider these 4 steps. I’m so glad we did!
