When I was in high school, the idea of going to college got me excited. But I wasn’t sure how to get from Point A (high school graduation) to Point B (actually attending college). Just thinking about applying to schools and selecting the university where I would spend four whole years of my life was extremely intimidating. But breaking the line between Point A and Point B down into specific tasks helped me confidently follow God into the slightly scary, super awesome world of college.

Here are some tips on how you can prepare for your college experience!

  • Visit college campuses.

If you are interested in attending a university or have been accepted to one of your top choices, visit its campus. Get on their website and research your options. Cedarville provides on-campus visit options and virtual tours. From personalized visits tailored to your interests and drone tours of campus, to previewing classes and viewing residence rooms, there are multiple ways you can get a feel for life on campus.

  • Take online classes.

A great way to save money and time at college is by taking online classes before you graduate high school. If your university of choice provides dual enrollment options — where you can take a college class and have it count toward your high school transcript — consider doing it! At Cedarville, we have a program called College Now that puts you on an accelerated pathway to graduation and many students take advantage of the opportunity to earn college credit while still in highschool.

  • Apply for scholarships.

Let’s be honest: college is expensive. But scholarships are a great way to counter the cost of attending school! There are highschool GPA-based scholarships, need-based scholarships, and athletic scholarships — just to name a few. And 100% of Cedarville freshmen receive financial aid. • Get excited.

As you pray, plan, and prepare, don’t forget to get excited about this next stage of life! While moving away to university and starting college classes can be intimidating, it is such a fun season of life. It’s okay to be nervous and a little sad and a bit scared about all of the changes college brings. But it’s also okay to be excited about the next steps God is calling you to take! The years you spend at university are going to be an adventure — and the Lord will walk with you every step of the way.

Your journey between Point A and Point B may not be what you expect, and it will probably look different than mine, but you can trust God with the process. Regardless of the university you choose, we’re cheering you on to pursue His will for your life! And if you decide to spend your 1000 days of college here at Cedarville, we will be so happy to welcome you into our university family.

We hope to see you soon, future Yellow Jackets!
