As an incoming freshman, college can seem intimidating. It\u2019s hard to leave everything you\u2019ve known and move into a completely new environment. I was terrified during\u00a0<\/span>Getting<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Started Weekend<\/span>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and to make matters worse, I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0know anyone\u00a0else\u00a0at Cedarville University. Not only was I moving hours away from my family, but I was also entering\u00a0college\u00a0with no friends. I was\u00a0petrified!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Feeling Alone at College? You\u2019re Not the Only One<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In hindsight, I had no reason to\u00a0fear. God brought me to Cedarville for a purpose, and He had\u00a0a plan for me. However,\u00a0that was hard to remember\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0moment. I had\u00a0a lot of\u00a0worries, but my biggest one was meeting people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I assumed everyone was moving in with\u00a0buddies, and I would be alone because I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know anyone. Little did I know, I was completely wrong.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So many incoming\u00a0freshmen\u00a0were in the same situation\u00a0I\u00a0was, coming in with no friends and worried about\u00a0making\u00a0new ones. Moreover, those who\u00a0did already have\u00a0friends were extremely kind and\u00a0more than willing to include me.\u00a0Everyone\u00a0at\u00a0Cedarville\u00a0made it\u00a0super easy to find friends.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/h2>\n

How To Make Friends Your First Wee<\/span>k of College<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cedarville knows and understands that new students are looking for friends.\u00a0They specifically designed the entire move-in weekend, which they call Getting Started\u00a0Weekend, to help incoming\u00a0freshmen\u00a0create connections\u00a0from day one.\u00a0It also helps that\u00a0roommates are\u00a0practically built-in\u00a0friends.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I met my roommate the day I moved in, and we\u00a0stayed together\u00a0during\u00a0Getting\u00a0Started\u00a0Weekend. Having someone to tag\u00a0along\u00a0with\u00a0when exploring and embarking on all the new activities around campus can calm\u00a0your\u00a0nerves and make you more confident.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you either\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have a roommate or they already have\u00a0a\u00a0group, then\u00a0Sting Groups\u00a0are another\u00a0great opportunity\u00a0to find people to stick with. Sting Groups are\u00a0designed to introduce you to other incoming\u00a0freshmen\u00a0during Getting Started Weekend.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My\u00a0Sting\u00a0Group was great! We met up at our designated spot around the lake, and my Sting Leaders led us in conversation, which helped a lot with making friends early because I was so nervous. Additionally, after getting to know your\u00a0Sting\u00a0Group, you all\u00a0go\u00a0to the Jacket Fest together, which was the main\u00a0place\u00a0I met my closest friends.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the Jacket Fest, all the incoming\u00a0freshmen\u00a0gather\u00a0in one field and play yard games for hours. This was my favorite part of\u00a0move-in week. There\u00a0are\u00a0snacks,\u00a0music,\u00a0and every yard game you can think of. This was when I\u00a0really\u00a0stepped out of my comfort zone,\u00a0and it was\u00a0worth it. I introduced myself to as many new people as I could, and I strongly encourage every other incoming\u00a0freshman\u00a0to do the same.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally,\u00a0another\u00a0way to make friends in the first week is by talking to your neighbors. There are so many students in your hall\u00a0or\u00a0unit that you will be living with all year. The faster you make those connections and introduce yourself, the more time\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0allow\u00a0those relationships to\u00a0grow. This is one thing I struggled with, and if I could go back and change it, I would.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0do\u00a0a great job\u00a0at introducing myself to my hall and staying active when it came to all the dorm events.\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0make the same\u00a0mistake\u00a0I did! It will be uncomfortable at first, but you will thank yourself later down the road.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How To Build Friendships After Move-In Week<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Additionally, those dorm events I mentioned are not just during the first week of school. The <\/span>Resident Assistants (RAs)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0do\u00a0a great job\u00a0at planning events and gathering everyone together throughout the entire school year. This can be just a lunch with your hall,\u00a0or it can be a full event with your bro-sis.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every dorm has its \u201cbro-sis,\u201d which is a section of a guy\u2019s dorm and a section of a girl\u2019s dorm that plan\u00a0events together. These bro-sis groups stay the same all year, which creates another\u00a0great opportunity\u00a0to meet more people. Our\u00a0bro-sis would\u00a0play weekly games in the Engineering\u00a0and Science Center, and it was a blast.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0good way\u00a0to make friends is through\u00a0<\/span>D-Groups.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0These are year-long\u00a0Bible studies that embark on\u00a0studying\u00a0a different book of the\u00a0Bible\u00a0or topic\u00a0every year. They are great opportunities to build deeper, more meaningful connections with others by studying God\u2019s\u00a0Word together.\u00a0D-Groups\u00a0provide a\u00a0crucial\u00a0support system\u00a0for college\u00a0life, and\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0advise\u00a0all\u00a0freshmen\u00a0to\u00a0join one.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The last<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0probably greatest\u00a0way I made friends in school was through classes.\u00a0You\u2019ll\u00a0meet so many people when classes begin, and most professors include group work and projects, which\u00a0will\u00a0help you\u00a0get to know others.\u00a0Once you meet people in your major, you will\u00a0likely have\u00a0multiple classes with them throughout\u00a0your\u00a0four years of college.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Making connections within classes allows for more friendships to grow even outside of class. The best way to do this is to study with a group. I started\u00a0doing\u00a0this\u00a0freshman\u00a0year, and I loved it. Studying with a group makes it more fun and helps you learn more, all the while making friends and building those relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Trust God and Take Initiative<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Although college can be intimidating,\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0forget that you are not alone. Countless students\u00a0enter\u00a0feeling\u00a0completely lost, without friends or a support group on campus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0crucial to\u00a0take advantage of\u00a0the many\u00a0opportunities\u00a0to\u00a0establish\u00a0friendships early on. Whether that\u00a0is through\u00a0meeting a bunch of people at Jacket Fest, hanging out with others in your hall, or studying with a group of students from your class, take\u00a0the initiative\u00a0and begin to foster those\u00a0relationships\u00a0\u2014\u00a0you\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0regret it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

College is daunting, and it is easy to become discouraged, but God placed you here\u00a0for a reason, and you\u00a0can\u00a0trust that He will work through that. Proverbs 3:5 says, \u201cTrust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.\u201d\u00a0No matter your doubts, you\u00a0can\u00a0trust God\u00a0with them all.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Worried about making friends your first week at Cedarville?
