A Childhood Calling Becomes Reality <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I remember lying in my bunk bed as a kid\u00a0and\u00a0thinking about how I wanted to go on a\u00a0mission\u00a0trip. Years\u00a0later, during my third semester at Cedarville, I felt God telling me that it was time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cedarville University offers\u00a0<\/span>GO<\/span><\/a>\u00a0mission trips during school breaks (Christmas, spring break, and summer), sending teams of students, faculty, and staff around the world with the message of the Gospel.<\/span>
\nThrough GO,\u00a0<\/span>I heard about\u00a0<\/span>CU Relief<\/span><\/a>, a student-led organization founded to support hurricane relief in North\u00a0Carolina,\u00a0from some friends last year.\u00a0I felt an overwhelming call to spend my fall break with them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0had\u00a0visited the area a couple of months before the storm hit and fell in love with the beautiful mountains and foliage.\u00a0Though\u00a0it has been\u00a0over a year\u00a0since\u00a0Hurricane Helene\u00a0swept\u00a0through the East Coast, the damage in the Appalachians\u00a0was\u00a0still\u00a0affecting\u00a0many lives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I knew I had to help!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Working Hard\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0Greate<\/span>r Purpose <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

My team got an early start on the trip. We piled into vans at 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning to start our seven-hour drive to Black Mountain, North Carolina.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our mission was to demolish two trailer homes belonging to a\u00a0brother and\u00a0sister that were destroyed by the flooding.\u00a0Demolishing the houses would allow\u00a0<\/span>Emerge Ministries<\/span><\/a>, the organization we were working with, to\u00a0build\u00a0new homes. If we successfully completed our demolition,\u00a0it would move them three months ahead of schedule.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0mission\u00a0involved\u00a0intense labor, but it was\u00a0very rewarding\u00a0work.\u00a0There is something satisfying about knocking down walls, breaking windows, and tearing off\u00a0roofs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0also learned some new skills, like how to use a certain type of saw. I was up on the roof for most of Friday, ripping apart shingles and\u00a0sawing\u00a0off\u00a0plywood.\u00a0On Saturday, we had to bag up loose insulation,\u00a0which is something I never expected to do.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Serving Through\u00a0the\u00a0Gospel\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Most important\u00a0were\u00a0the relationships we built with the family we were serving. We were able to hear their story, sit, cry, and pray with them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We also befriended their neighbor and his daughter. The five-year-old little girl was precious, and we\u00a0immediately\u00a0fell in love. Through hide-and-seek games and dance parties, we brought joy to a place that was hurting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the trip, the leadership team emphasized spending time with God individually and as a group. They encouraged us to read a devotional during breakfast that we would later discuss in small groups in the evening.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We also had\u00a0several\u00a0worship nights,\u00a0which were such a sweet time to\u00a0gather\u00a0to praise God. The leadership\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0the importance and value of praying before anything we do.\u00a0Turning\u00a0to the Lord in constant\u00a0prayer\u00a0helped keep\u00a0us\u00a0focused\u00a0on why we were there<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 for the Lord\u2019s glory, not our own.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sunday was my favorite day of the trip.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We invited the neighbor and his daughter to join us in attending a small church. The pastor blessed us with a delicious breakfast. Before the service, we played with some of the kids on the playground. After a powerful sermon, we hung around the church for a while. Some guys from the team prayed with the neighbor, and to our delight, he came to Christ.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After a bittersweet goodbye, we left to go back to campus. The long van ride back was\u00a0filled with\u00a0lots of laughter, a quick stop at Buc-ee\u2019s, and encouraging conversations about all God did.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lessons From the Mountains\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

One thing this trip taught me was how God works in unexpected ways. Going into the trip, I thought we were only going to have the brother and sister\u00a0to witness\u00a0to.\u00a0However, that was not the\u00a0case;\u00a0they had a lot of other family members\u00a0present, not to mention their neighbor and his daughter. God opened so many doors\u00a0for us\u00a0to\u00a0evangelize\u00a0and build relationships.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A perfect example is how my friend packed a stethoscope in her first aid kit, even though she really had no use for it.\u00a0Since\u00a0she just happened to bring it, a young mom was able to listen to her baby\u2019s heartbeat for the first\u00a0time,\u00a0which was so special.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cedarville student, Alaina Bourquin, shares her fall break experience serving with CU Relief in North Carolina.
