College is full of many firsts, a lot of them living-related: College was my first time living away from home for months at a time, my first time having a roommate who wasn\u2019t a sibling or a cousin, and my first time getting groceries for myself. It was all ve<\/span>ry new and exciting and, while it took some time, I became used to the dorm\u00a0life\u00a0and really appreciated\u00a0the community that comes with it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So far in my college career, I have only lived in a dorm.\u00a0However, I have plenty of friends who\u00a0also\u00a0experienced\u00a0their first house or apartment\u00a0during their time at college who\u00a0have loved\u00a0that experience.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where you decide to live during your time at college is subjective,\u00a0with some people\u00a0preferring\u00a0one\u00a0option\u00a0or the other.\u00a0But if you find yourself\u00a0unsure\u00a0which you would prefer,\u00a0here are a few points to think about!\u00a0From there, you can make your own choice\u00a0in your\u00a0upperclassman\u00a0years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pro\u00a0#1: The\u00a0Total\u00a0Cost May Be Cheaper<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

It all depends on where you decide to live. For example, if you were hoping to find a cheap mansion just down the street from your most frequented academic building, you<\/span>may not\u00a0be in\u00a0luck. But a modest apartment or a small house\u00a0a short drive away? Your chances will\u00a0probably look\u00a0better there.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My roommate, Chloe, and I almost considered living in a house this semester (though we ultimately decided to stay in Maddox), and cost was a great concern of ours. The house<\/span>we were looking at was small and would have\u00a0been\u00a0split\u00a0between four people, amounting to about $400 with\u00a0utilities: a\u00a0fair price for a house that was\u00a0right\u00a0across the street from campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The price seemed right, especially considering Chloe and I were\u00a0guaranteed\u00a0to\u00a0each have our own room if we moved in, but there was another issue that we\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0quite get around.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Con\u00a0#1: You\u00a0Need\u00a0To\u00a0Make a\u00a0Monthly\u00a0Payment<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Unlike\u00a0<\/span>on-campus housing<\/span><\/a>, you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0just pay\u00a0your rent\u00a0upfront with loans and\u00a0scholarships\u00a0and\u00a0be on your merry way for the rest of the school year. Living in a house meant we would have to be able to supply that monthly $400\u00a0straight from our bank accounts.\u00a0I was\u00a0hesitant\u00a0since I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have a job at the time, so it became one of the deal-breakers for our decision.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, it is not impossible for a student t<\/span>o make those monthly\u00a0payments;\u00a0it simply requires\u00a0extra\u00a0time and work. If you want to live\u00a0off\u00a0campus,\u00a0then you\u00a0may\u00a0need to be prepared\u00a0to take long shifts at\u00a0<\/span>The Commons<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0one of the\u00a0<\/span>coffee shops\u00a0down the block<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It can be busy, but\u00a0it is also\u00a0so worth it once you get that\u00a0paycheck\u00a0at the end of the week!\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0all a matter of\u00a0whether\u00a0you are able\u00a0and\u00a0willing to put that\u00a0extra\u00a0work in\u00a0around your\u00a0classes\u00a0and social life. That\u00a0apartment\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0going to pay for\u00a0itself,\u00a0you know!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pro #2: You Get To Make Your Own Meals<\/span><\/h2>\n

This is one thing my roommate was really looking forward to if we decided to live in a house. She is a great cook, and it would have been nice to have control over what we had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the food on campus\u00a0is\u00a0perfectly fine,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>each<\/span><\/a>option\u00a0sports\u00a0a diverse\u00a0menu<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for its students,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0difficult to compare\u00a0that\u00a0to the food you made with your own love and care.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chloe herself is a wonderful cook and an even better baker.\u00a0Personally,\u00a0I\u00a0love making my pasta al dente (just the way I like it), and I love to bake a fresh batch of cookies from time to time, but I still\u00a0had\u00a0my concerns.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Con\u00a0#2: You\u00a0Have\u00a0To\u00a0Make Your\u00a0<\/span>Own Meals<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

It all depends on what kind of chef you are. I am no chef at all, which is why the opportunity to cook turned into more of a chore than a luxury. All I really know how to cook is pasta, and the pastries I bake could only provide so much\u00a0nutrition.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know if I had the time to\u00a0cook!\u00a0Senior\u00a0year\u00a0is\u00a0busy,\u00a0and I\u00a0have a tendency to\u00a0spend too much time on my work and not enough time getting food.\u00a0If I need encouragement to go out and get a meal from Chick-Fil-A,\u00a0it\u00a0would\u2019ve\u00a0been even harder\u00a0to get up and make something for myself with my limited cooking skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, this is subjective. Many people, such as Chloe, thrive in the kitchen and\u00a0are able to\u00a0whip up absolute masterpieces\u00a0in the midst of\u00a0their busy schedules. I\u00a0am\u00a0just\u00a0not one of tho<\/span><\/p>\n

se people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Determining\u00a0whether or not\u00a0you\u00a0like cooking every day\u00a0is something you\u00a0should consider\u00a0before making a choice\u00a0about\u00a0off-campus housing.\u00a0Cooking\u00a0is a skill we must all learn at one point or another, but\u00a0if\u00a0you would rather learn to cook around other experienced cooks\u00a0(i.e.\u00a0Mom and Dad), you might as well take advantage of one of the meal plans Cedarville has to offer\u00a0instead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pro #3: Independence!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Having\u00a0your own place\u00a0is thrilling!\u00a0There is a joy to\u00a0opening\u00a0the door to a house\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0all yours:\u00a0your kitchen, your bathroom, your washing\u00a0machine\u00a0and garage. I have experienced plenty of decorative freedoms in my dorm rooms, but\u00a0my off-campus friends enjoy living\u00a0somewhere without room checks,\u00a0curfews, or a hundred other girls using the same washers and dryers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, I decided that\u00a0<\/span>off-campus housing<\/span><\/a>\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0my jam, but I know plenty of people who adore it. I have seen how they decorate their bedrooms, their kitchens, and their bathrooms. It is not just one small room they have freedom over,\u00a0but a whole home. As scary as it is, there is a bit of excitement to it. Especially for older students, who\u00a0can get\u00a0very busy, not having\u00a0curfew\u00a0or room checks is a huge plus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Con #3: Paying fo<\/span>r Decorations<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Some\u00a0college\u00a0students\u00a0can\u00a0have trouble\u00a0furnishing\u00a0an entire house. It depends on the house and\u00a0landlords. Sometimes,\u00a0houses come\u00a0furnished with\u00a0a couch, bedframe and mattress, fridge, and table\u00a0\u2014 anything you might need.\u00a0Other\u00a0houses will be lacking in a couple of amenities,\u00a0such as a couch or washing machine.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The house Chloe\u00a0were\u00a0considering moving\u00a0into was fully furnished, which added to the temptation, but I know of some houses that\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have a washing machine or dryer.\u00a0These sorts of things are usually a group effort:\u00a0Housemates\u00a0collaborate\u00a0together\u00a0to bring something to\u00a0the\u00a0table\u00a0… or, in some cases,\u00a0to bring\u00a0an actual table!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Living Off-Campus Worth It?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Living off campus\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0for everyone (otherwise Cedarville\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0have so many residence halls),\u00a0but\u00a0it certainly is\u00a0wonderful\u00a0for some\u00a0students. While you\u00a0will\u00a0likely be\u00a0on\u00a0campus\u00a0your\u00a0freshman\u00a0year,\u00a0off-campus living is\u00a0certainly something you should consider later in your Cedarville life.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For your\u00a0freshman\u00a0year, enjoy where you are!\u00a0I believe that the\u00a0<\/span>community\u00a0is one of the strongest aspects\u00a0at\u00a0Cedarville<\/span><\/a>, and I know I have done so much better socially, spiritually, and mentally\u00a0spending my time at college close by my community. Invest in your dorm community, and you may just want to stay with them all four years!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
