I remember the mixed emotions I felt as a high school senior. I was mostly excited to go to college. I had decided to double major in\u00a0<\/span>keyboard pedagogy<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>professional writing and information design<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0and I was thrilled for the opportunity to study both fields.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The thought of gaining independence and living somewhere new also exhilarated me. However, apprehension crept beneath that excitement for the same reasons: What if I couldn\u2019t handle it? What if my classes were too hard? What if I couldn\u2019t make any friends? And what if I had \u00a0\u00a0\"\" all\u00a0those prob<\/span><\/span>lems\u00a0at once\u00a0and became so homesick that I could barely continue\u00a0at\u00a0Cedarville?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m so glad that the Lord alleviated those fears soon after I arrived on campus. By the end of my first week of college, it felt natural to be at Cedarville University. Before my freshman year ended, I considere<\/span>d Cedarville to be\u00a0my second home.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are three things that made Cedarville feel like home so quickly:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Loving Student Body\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u2019m\u00a0shy and dread talking to people I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know.\u00a0Because\u00a0of that, I worried that I would never make friends at college and\u00a0would\u00a0be constantly lonely.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When I got to campus,\u00a0however,\u00a0I was relieved\u00a0to find\u00a0that I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have to\u00a0initiate\u00a0conversations with students\u00a0\u2014\u00a0they sought me out before I could even think about making friends. Although I can be hard t<\/span><\/p>\n

o get to know because\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0quiet, many people intentionally included me in their conversations and social activities.\u00a0In fact,\u00a0I soon found that I\u00a0had the opposite problem to loneliness: finding times to be by myself!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a Cedarville student, you already have so much in common with your classmates.\u00a0You are brothers and sisters in Christ\u00a0who are\u00a0preparing for your futures\u00a0and interested in academics. With those similarities,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0easy to enjoy social activities with people\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0just met.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During my freshman year, I quickly got comfortable with the other piano majors, even\u00a0the\u00a0upperclassmen. We ate dinner together once a week, attended a conference,\u00a0enjoyed\u00a0an\u00a0<\/span>orchestra concert, and went hiking.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

No matter what your major is or who is in your dorm, you will\u00a0likely\u00a0find\u00a0people who are eager to hang out with you\u00a0if you are open to it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Encouraging Professors\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I was a little scared of tackling college academics, and in addition to the coursework, I was afraid of the professors\u00a0\u2014\u00a0I feared that they would be unreasonable with their expectations or unforgiving if I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0understand a concept.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That fear turned out to be\u00a0completely wrong!\u00a0The professors I have had during my first year and a half at Cedarville have been exceptionally kind.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of them opened each c<\/span>lass by taking prayer reque<\/span>sts.\u00a0Last semester, one of my professors even\u00a0frequently\u00a0asked me about a prayer request I had and whether it was being answered. His concern for my request reflects the heart of all the\u00a0faculty\u00a0at Cedarville. Each one reflects a life modeled after Christ.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They want to encourage you and help you succeed in both school and your personal life. I have loved\u00a0my professors’\u00a0mentorship,\u00a0and\u00a0having them as role models for my spiritual and professional life helped me quickly get comfortable with my classes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you have trouble with anything\u00a0\u2014\u00a0vague assignment instructions, difficult subject material, etc.\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the professors are available through office hours, where\u00a0you can\u00a0meet\u00a0with them to talk about anything\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0concerned about.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of my professors also check their emails\u00a0outside of\u00a0the school\u00a0day and are quick to respond. Any time I have visited or emailed my professors, they have been patient and excited to help me.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do not be afraid to ask for help!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/p>\n

The Campus Itself\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I love being on Cedarville\u2019s campus; it is beautiful during e<\/span>very season of the year. I especially enjoy the lake and the gorgeous sunsets\u00a0\u2014\u00a0since there are no hills, you can see so much of the sky.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The classrooms and buildings are also well-kept. As a professional writing and information design major,\u00a0I get to have several classes in the\u00a0<\/span>new\u00a0Scharnberg Business and Communication\u00a0Center<\/span><\/a>, and the quality of its classrooms, furniture, and architecture continue\u00a0to impress me.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0typical for\u00a0freshmen\u00a0to worry about getting lost, but I have never had this problem.\u00a0Most of the buildings are\u00a0positioned\u00a0around the lake, so they are easy to find. And if you do ge<\/span>t lost, there are plenty of people around who are eager to help you get where\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0going.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>dining\u00a0on campus<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is also excellent. I enjoy eating in\u00a0The\u00a0Commons\u00a0(especially the ice cream!), but if I don\u2019t like what the\u00a0dining hall\u00a0is serving or just want something different, we have a Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, and other options to choose from that accept\u00a0your\u00a0meal plan as payment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The meal plans even come with spending money that you can use for snacks at any of the dining venues. I use most of mine on Chick-fil-A\u00a0milkshakes!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome Home<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Maybe you\u2019re\u00a0wondering\u00a0whether\u00a0you belong\u00a0at\u00a0a school in the middle of Ohio cornfields.\u00a0Maybe you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0think you can overcome homesickness as you leave home for the first time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
