At Cedarville University,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0find\u00a0a community like no other. The connection between students is indescribable. Whether\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0known\u00a0someone\u00a0for years or you met them yesterday, everyone treats each other like family.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This was the driving factor that brought me to Cedarville. Yes, the campus is beautiful, and they have great academics, but the relationships\u00a0among\u00a0all the students and the lively vibe everyone\u00a0brings\u00a0are\u00a0unprecedented.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is\u00a0sometimes\u00a0called the \u201cCedarville\u00a0bubble.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To give you a little taste of the fun community on campus, there are a few things I can teach you when\u00a0it\u00a0comes to how Cedarville students talk. With the\u00a0community comes\u00a0lots of fun, silly \u201clingo\u201d phrases we use daily.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hopefully, this post can help you begin to understand some of these sayings and help acclimate you to life\u00a0in the \u201cCedarville\u00a0bubble\u201d\u00a0(there\u2019s\u00a0one saying already!).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cedar-everything<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

With such a tight-knit community, there are lots of things specific to Cedarville\u2019s campus and student body.\u00a0Thus, we\u00a0often refer to\u00a0things commonly seen\u00a0as\u00a0Cedarville-specific\u00a0by\u00a0affixing \u201cCedar\u201d\u00a0to\u00a0them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example,\u00a0since\u00a0our campus\u00a0is\u00a0in the middle of a bunch of cornfields, the winds can get\u00a0pretty crazy. These are the \u201cCedar-winds.\u201d\u00a0The\u00a0lake (called\u00a0Cedar Lake)\u00a0tends to magnify the winds as well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, we only experience cedar-winds periodically,\u00a0and\u00a0it’s\u00a0typically\u00a0just\u00a0during the wintertime. Around that same time, during cold and flu season, you may also hear about the\u00a0Cedar-plague (it\u2019s\u00a0just a\u00a0common\u00a0cold).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you begin to use these phrases, you will sound like a Cedarville student in no time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Abbreviations\u00a0Galore<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Adding to our lingo,\u00a0we find ways\u00a0to make everything more\u00a0efficient. One way we do that is by shortening everything.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, I mean everything.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We shorten class building names, food choices, gas stations, coffee shops, and everything in between.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance,\u00a0pretty much every\u00a0building on campus is abbreviated. The Dixon Ministry Center is the DMC, the Stevens Student Center is the SSC, the Biblical Center for Theological Studies is the BTS\u00a0…\u00a0you get the gist.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is\u00a0the\u00a0case\u00a0for every single building around campus, whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just one word (Apple, Tyler, Callen) or an acronym.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My personal favorites\u00a0are for\u00a0dining options. Chick-fil-A\u00a0is just Chick, and Panda Express is just Panda.\u00a0There are also some more places we have abbreviated\u00a0off campus. The gas station across the road is called \u201cthe rip.\u201d Additionally,\u00a0one of our\u00a0coffee\u00a0shops\u00a0in town, called Beans-n-Cream, is shortened to \u201cBeans.\u201d If you implement these abbreviations in your speech, you will sound just like a\u00a0Cedarville\u00a0student\u00a0in no time!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cedarville-Specific Events<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of my favorite things about Cedarville is its on-campus events. The\u00a0University does\u00a0a great job\u00a0at hosting fun activities throughout the\u00a0semesters\u00a0to keep things novel and interesting. And with these activities come names for them, which can be confusing if you are unfamiliar with them!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first one\u00a0you need to know, which is\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0end of\u00a0each\u00a0school year, is called\u00a0<\/span>Elliv.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0This\u00a0event, where students get to\u00a0showcase\u00a0their God-given gifts and talents\u00a0in front of the entire\u00a0University, is my favorite by far.\u00a0Another event I love to look out for is called Moonlight Madness, which is a\u00a0late-night basketball showcase\u00a0held at the beginning of\u00a0basketball\u00a0season.\u00a0During\u00a0Christmas\u00a0season, Cedarville has\u00a0<\/span>Deck the Halls<\/span><\/a>, where each residence hall acts out a story in its hall for other students to experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cedarville also often hosts\u00a0<\/span>Alt\u00a0Nights<\/span><\/a>, which are a blast. These are nights on campus where activities are scattered all over. They will have things like putt-putt and laser tag in the field\u00a0house, a silent disco in the BTS, a movie in the DMC, breakfast for dinner in\u00a0the dining hall, and so much more. These are great because they are\u00a0a good way\u00a0to take a break from the stress school brings.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure to look out for these\u00a0events, now that\u00a0you know their specific names!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. White\u2019s Catchphrase<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The last, and arguably most important, Cedarville phrase is coined by Dr. White, giving the student body a good motto to live by.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When preaching, Dr. White loves to drive home the idea of \u201cNo Bible,\u00a0no breakfast.\u201d By saying this, he portrays the importance of reading your Bible daily, ensuring one-on-one time with God, which is such a gift to experience. Therefore, making sure to read your Bible first thing in the morning is the best way to start the morning.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you hear students, or even professors, saying, \u201cNo Bible, no breakfast,\u201d now you kno<\/span>w why!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusions (one last motto)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I will leave you with one brief, final phrase that Cedarville students say.\u00a0On account of\u00a0us being the Yellow Jackets, which have stingers, our own student motto is \u201cSting\u00a0\u2019em!\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that you know\u00a0the basics of Cedarville lingo,\u00a0I hope\u00a0you are getting excited\u00a0to live\u00a0life on campus.\u00a0Sting\u00a0\u2019em, future Yellow Jacket!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
