Hey everyone! My name is Katie Handel, and I am a senior\u00a0<\/span>English<\/span><\/a>\u00a0major at Cedarville University.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0from Crofton, Maryland, and\u00a0Cedarville is in my family\u2019s blood; I\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0have wanted to attend college anywhere else!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A day in my life starts in my dorm.\u00a0I lived in\u00a0<\/span>Printy\u00a0Hall<\/span><\/a>\u00a0during\u00a0my\u00a0freshman\u00a0year and\u00a0<\/span>Johnson\u00a0Hall<\/span><\/a>\u00a0during\u00a0my remaining\u00a0three years. While in Johnson,\u00a0I have been\u00a0serving as\u00a0an\u00a0<\/span>RA (Resident Assistant)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0the last two years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though it\u2019s a longer walk to the academic buildings, the community in Johnson has grown me in so many ways. Due to the distance,\u00a0<\/span>those who live in Johnson are here\u00a0intentionally,\u00a0and that attitude\u00a0reflects in\u00a0dorm\u00a0events and\u00a0hall\u00a0interactions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Morning\u00a0Routine<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I\u2019ve always been an early riser, so I normally wake up an hour before I need to leave my room. During that hour, I get ready for my day and have<\/span>\u00a0my devotional\u00a0time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve\u00a0found that\u00a0doing my\u00a0devotions\u00a0in the morning\u00a0works\u00a0best for me because I love to start my day in the Word and end my day praying with my roommate right before we curl into\u00a0our\u00a0beds. Sometimes,\u00a0a few\u00a0friends and I brave the\u00a0cold morning\u00a0weather to work out, and other mornings,\u00a0I play tennis\u00a0with a group of\u00a0retired\u00a0men.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Tuesdays\u00a0and\u00a0Thursdays,\u00a0I have\u00a0my\u00a0Literary Research and Recovery\u00a0(LRR)\u00a0class\u00a0with one of my friends in my hall. I normally knock on her door at 8:10 so we can start walking over together.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0took\u00a0Literary Research and Recovery for two reasons: 1) I needed another class to fill my schedule,\u00a0and 2) the professor mentioned publishing opportunities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Little did I know how\u00a0much\u00a0God would grow me in that class. In LRR, we are transcribing the journals of Martha McMillan,\u00a0who lived in Cedarville in the 1800s. She wrote about her daily life,\u00a0her\u00a0children, and events on their\u00a0farm.\u00a0Most importantly, she made notes in the journal\u00a0almost every\u00a0Sabbath and wrote what she learned. These Sabbath lessons have grown me so much in my own faith and reminded me of God\u2019s faithfulness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapel\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Chapel<\/span><\/a>\u00a0each\u00a0day\u00a0is\u00a0also a wonderful reminder of\u00a0Christ\u2019s faithfulness.\u00a0Recently,\u00a0Bill Boulet\u00a0spoke\u00a0from\u00a0Acts 20\u00a0about\u00a0being\u00a0deeply rooted in Christ to combat spiritual warfare.\u00a0To stand firm, believers need to lean into God and trust in his faithfulness and promises. Only in Christ will we stand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/p>\n

Lunch Break<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I normally have a\u00a0full\u00a0calendar of scheduled meals, whether\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0with my friends, a girl in my hall, or my fianc\u00e9.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>The Commons<\/span><\/a>\u00a0offers the best balance\u00a0between meal options\u00a0and\u00a0provides\u00a0more\u00a0<\/span>allergy-friendly\u00a0options<\/span><\/a>\u00a0than\u00a0some\u00a0other dining\u00a0locations. Because my roommate is gluten-\u00a0and egg-free, we often eat at the dining hall together.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My lunch times also change every semester based\u00a0off\u00a0my schedule. This semester,\u00a0I work at the\u00a0<\/span>Postal Services<\/span><\/a>\u00a0four times a week, so after lunch on Tuesdays,\u00a0I load lockers for an hour. I enjoy working at\u00a0Postal\u00a0Services\u00a0because everyone is\u00a0welcoming,\u00a0and the work\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0too hard or complicated.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Classes<\/span><\/h2>\n

My favorite class this semester\u00a0is\u00a0Creative Capstone II.\u00a0In this class,\u00a0creative writing students\u00a0take two semesters to complete\u00a0a finished\u00a0creative work.\u00a0My roommate and I are\u00a0currently\u00a0writing\u00a0novels,\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0few\u00a0others are\u00a0writing\u00a0poetry or essay collections.\u00a0This class is my favorite because I want to\u00a0publish\u00a0creative work\u00a0when I graduate\u00a0and already have\u00a0a few\u00a0projects\u00a0in the works.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0cl<\/span>ass directed\u00a0toward seniors\u00a0like me\u00a0is English Seminar.\u00a0In\u00a0this class,\u00a0we\u00a0prepare an\u00a0hourlong\u00a0presentation on a short story (past years have had different\u00a0focuses),\u00a0then lead an\u00a0hourlong discussion on the text. Later in the semester,\u00a0we will\u00a0write\u00a0an\u00a0original research capstone paper we started researching last semester in\u00a0Literary\u00a0Theory.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, the English Seminar class is broken into two sections: Tuesday and Wednesday. I am in the Wednesday section, but I attended the senior presentation of a friend of mine this Tuesday.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inklings Workshop Group Meeting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

On Tuesdays,\u00a0I usually also\u00a0attend\u00a0my Inklings\u00a0workshop\u00a0group, which is a group of people from all sorts of majors who\u00a0meet to\u00a0workshop\u00a0creative\u00a0writing\u00a0pieces.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today I\u00a0led\u00a0an event\u00a0for\u00a0my hall\u00a0instead.\u00a0I took\u00a0some\u00a0girls to\u00a0enjoy\u00a0Pizookies\u00a0(pizza cookies) at BJ\u2019s,\u00a0a restaurant\u00a0about\u00a020 minutes\u00a0from campus.\u00a0Events like this are a wonderful time to bond and enjoy a sweet treat off campus at the same time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though\u00a0my\u00a0class schedule is the same every week, each day looks different. Professors are always teaching\u00a0us\u00a0different concepts, chapel speaks into my life in\u00a0different ways, and God is always moving.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a senior looking back, I see t<\/span>he growth I have experienced both in my relationship with Christ and as an English major. God has grown my writing so much, and I know\u00a0He\u00a0will carry me far.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
