As a\u00a0Midwestern\u00a0university built on love for Christ and\u00a0love for others, where the truth of Scripture is woven into all areas of study,\u00a0Cedarville University\u00a0is special in a multitude of ways.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hi, I am Abbey Patterson, and I am a\u00a0junior\u00a0middle\u00a0childhood\u00a0education\u00a0major from London, Ohio.\u00a0As a born and raised Ohio resident, I have had my fair share of battling the weather.\u00a0Even so,\u00a0I too have been caught in the wrong attire for the hourly weather change that the state\u00a0often decides\u00a0to provide.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of\u00a0my lack of knowledge\u00a0(or\u00a0my mom would call lack of checking the weather app),\u00a0I have collected many stories of times when I battled the weather and the weather has won. However, I have also learned many tips to conquer the day without the ever-changing Ohio weather slowing me down! Today,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0sharing these tips with you!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Intentionally\u00a0Layer<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

This may seem obvious, but Ohio does get quite cold, especially once December hits. Intentionally layering means making sure that you stay warm while you walk from your dorm to your 8 a.m.\u00a0class. But, intentionally layering also means making sure that you are comfortable inside the classroom so that you can pay attention and pass your biology exam rather than worrying\u00a0about overheating.\u00a0Layering means making sure you have a couple of crewnecks on standby so that you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0turn into an icicle as you walk to your classes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, a common misconception for many students is that once the temperatures hit 65 degrees, you can pack away all your winter clothes.\u00a0Don’t do it! False spring will give way to second winter, and you’ll be wishing you had your heavy coat handy for those blustery walks across campus.\u00a0Intentionally layering means making sure you have\u00a0a couple of\u00a0crewnecks\u00a0on\u00a0standby\u00a0so that you don\u2019t turn into an icicle\u00a0as you walk to your classes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Invest in the\u00a0Essentials\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

As you plan out the things you need to bring to school, do not forget your weather essentials.\u00a0This list would include:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • raincoat<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • umbrella\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • warm coat\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • hat<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          • gloves for the winter<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • proper footwear<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              One addition I made to my weather\u00a0defenses\u00a0is rechargeable hand warmers. This was a\u00a0game-changer\u00a0this past winter because I could turn them on and feel them through my gloves\u00a0and\u00a0keep them in my coat pockets in case I forgot my gloves.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              Another\u00a0helpful\u00a0suggestion is to get a raincoat that doubles as a light\u00a0jacket\u00a0so you are more likely to be prepared for rain in the\u00a0spring.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              Ignore\u00a0Others’\u00a0Opinions on\u00a0What\u00a0It\u00a0Feels\u00a0Like\u00a0Outside<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

              As you get ready for the day, you will have people in your unit\/hall who will make comments about the weather outside.\u00a0More often than not, you will\u00a0regret\u00a0taking\u00a0their opinions\u00a0on the weather\u00a0as law.\u00a0Cedarville students come from everywhere from\u00a0the\u00a0sunny\u00a0West\u00a0to\u00a0the colder northern states!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              My suggestion to you is to do your own investigation. This could look like taking a short lap around the outside of your dorm in your outfit for the day to gauge the temperature,\u00a0wind level, and humidity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              Of course, this practice\u00a0just prepares you for the first part of\u00a0the day, so\u00a0make sure to\u00a0pair it with checking the weather app and the projected precipitation for the day.\u00a0This will prevent you from being underdressed\u00a0if\u00a0your tolerance for the cold is different from your roommates\u2019!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              \"\"<\/p>\n

              Imagine\u00a0Yourself in\u00a0Your\u00a0Outfit\u00a0Should the\u00a0Weather\u00a0Take a\u00a0Turn<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

              Imagine this: You planned the perfect outfit to wear to your education field experience\u00a0\u2014\u00a0your favorite pair of linen pants and a nice short-sleeve blouse\u00a0\u2014\u00a0but once recess comes, you look outside, and\u00a0it has started to snow. What\u00a0do you do\u00a0in this situation? Well, I do not have to imagine,\u00a0because\u00a0a similar situation\u00a0happened to me this spring\u00a0twice in the same week!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              My fatal flaw on\u00a0both days was\u00a0<\/span>not<\/span><\/i>\u00a0that I\u00a0failed to\u00a0check the weather but that I was ill-prepared with the essentials. I did not have a plan for what I would do if the weather shifted\u00a0during the day. If you want to\u00a0steer clear of\u00a0being cold, drenched, or toasty, my suggestion is to make a game plan for any way the weather can turn.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              Expect the\u00a0Unexpected\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

              One more comedic way is that we have a natural phenomenon called \u201csideways rain.\u201d If you are not familiar with this concept, it is when it is very windy and very rainy at the same time, so it seems as if there is a cloud of rain on every side of you, and no matter where you put your umbrella, the rain is always drenching as you walk to class! Yikes!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              Enjoy All Four Seasons of Weather on Campus in Ohio<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

              Whether you are someone who loves the sunshine or would rather be snuggled up indoors watching the snow fall, Ohio is the place for you. Ohio can be quite unpredictable\u00a0\u2014 sometimes\u00a0offering all four seasons in less than 24 hours\u00a0\u2014\u00a0so if you want to enjoy your time in\u00a0\u201cthe heart of it all,\u201d\u00a0prepare for the unpredictable!\u00a0And get ready to make a ton of jokes about the weather with friends back home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
