Coming to\u00a0college means\u00a0a\u00a0lot of\u00a0transitions\u00a0in many things, and finding a church to get connected with can be very nerve-wracking. There are so many different options in the village of Cedarville and the surrounding towns.\u00a0Especially as a freshman, maybe you don\u2019t have a car and don\u2019t know how you\u2019re going to get to where you need to go.\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0let your fears get in the way of finding the church for you!\u00a0To be perfectly honest, it is a little scary to step through the doors of a new church.\u00a0Maybe you\u2019ve\u00a0grown up going to the same church your whole life, like me. But it is so worth it when you find that one place where you can love the people and be loved in return.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where to Start<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Because Cedarville\u00a0students go to so many different churches, it is hard to pinpoint what exactly is best for you. One of the\u00a0helpful\u00a0things I did as a\u00a0freshman\u00a0was,\u00a0I went to the Involvement Fair with my roommate, and we met with a bunch of different tables for churches. The people were very friendly and wanted to give us every piece of information they had. I left the fair with my tote bag stuffed with church flyers and snacks. I still\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know exactly what church I wanted to visit first, so I did some research into the\u00a0places\u00a0I talked\u00a0to\u00a0at the fair. I checked their stories and mission statements to try to find\u00a0somewhere\u00a0that aligned with my beliefs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I ended up going to Grace Baptist Church right on Main Street since it was within walking distance, and I knew a few people who went there. Turns out, Grace has been the only church I have ever been to during my college career,\u00a0save\u00a0a few times I went to my roommate\u2019s church. I loved\u00a0the preaching\u00a0and\u00a0the worship. I\u00a0admired\u00a0the community, and I felt at home. The pastor taught straight from the Bible, which\u00a0is something\u00a0I always look for in a church leader.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to Get Involved<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

It\u00a0actually took\u00a0me a while before I found the courage to try some new things at Grace.\u00a0I visited the college ministry, but that\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0for me. It took me even longer before I tried again. I was going to visit the college ministry again, but I ran into a friend\u00a0on the way. She invited me to her ABF, Grace\u2019s equivalent to Sunday school. I am so glad she did, because ever since my first time in that class, I have loved it. The teaching was exactly what I\u00a0needed,\u00a0the class discussions were fantastic, and I always left, feeling like I had so much more to think about. The teacher\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0shy away from asking\u00a0hard questions, and neither did the others in the class. I felt like my knowledge of Scripture was finally being\u00a0fed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My ABF has had a few events since I\u00a0have been\u00a0involved, including a\u00a0cookout\u00a0at the end of September. We all got together at one of the leaders\u2019 houses and had a fun\u00a0time of\u00a0eating and fellowship. Nothing beats a good hamburger\u00a0and\u00a0firepit. Some of the younger people played\u00a0nine-square until it was too dark to see, and then we enjoyed sitting around the fire. I never would have been able to enjoy\u00a0this night if I\u00a0hadn\u2019t\u00a0had the courage to accept my friend\u2019s invitation\u00a0to the ABF\u00a0and been consistent in returning each week.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A few months later, my class had a Christmas party where we just spent the whole class time fellowshipping and getting to know each other\u00a0more. One of the\u00a0most important\u00a0things about getting connected with\u00a0a\u00a0church is finding those people you can get to know and care for. Grace offers smaller life groups throughout the week that consist of only a few people and focus on a variety of topics. Sometimes\u00a0they\u00a0will be going through a book of the Bible, or sometimes the group will be made up of people who are all going through similar struggles.\u00a0I personally am not involved in any, but I do have some friends who are, and I have always heard\u00a0really good\u00a0things about them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oftentimes, churches offer a mentorship program, where students can find an older person to meet with on a regular basis. Having a mentor can be super helpful when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0in college, especially one who is older than you, because\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0able to help you in this stage of life, having\u00a0encountered\u00a0similar trials. Most often, mentors and their mentees will meet at Beans or Orion for coffee and just sit and chat. I know not every church has a program like this, but if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not sure if yours does, just ask! And maybe if you reach out to ask and the church\u00a0doesn\u2019t, they could be encouraged to start one!\u00a0Maybe there\u2019s\u00a0an older person in the church who\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0know how to serve anymore and would be more than happy to meet you! It takes a lot of\u00a0intentionality, but it will be so rewarding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Find People of Like Minds<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I know as a college student, it can be tempting to only go to church when you have friends going, but if\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a day when everyone is sick or doing homework, and you still want to go to church,\u00a0do it! There have been many Sundays where\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0gone to services by myself because I know how important that time is. Going to church is vital for our\u00a0growth as Christians. Being surrounded by other believers is what refuels us for our upcoming week. I know life gets busy, and it can be scary to go alone. But it forms such a good habit, and it forces you to meet those people sitting around you.\u00a0So\u00a0find the people you can go to\u00a0church with\u00a0consistently, and if\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0week\u00a0they miss, try your hardest to go anyway!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be Encouraged!<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Finding a church when you come to school can be tough, but once you do, get involved!
