Over spring break this year, I got the\u00a0incredible\u00a0opportunity to\u00a0participate\u00a0in a\u00a0<\/span>GO trip<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to Boston, Massachusetts.\u00a0This trip was\u00a0a formative and fruitful experience for me and many others on the team.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0so\u00a0excited to get\u00a0to tell you about it!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Week of Boston Outreach<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The trip was coordinated in partnership with\u00a0<\/span>GenSend<\/span><\/a>, an offshoot of the North American Mission Board (NAMB) that focuses on equipping college-age students to plant and strengthen churches across\u00a0the United States and Canada.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our focus for the\u00a0trip\u00a0was to support and encourage churches\u00a0in the Boston area, engage in Gospel conversations all around the city, and gain\u00a0prayerful\u00a0insight into what it could look like for us as individuals to\u00a0further God\u2019s Kingdom wherever He plants us.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our week was spent\u00a0meeting with church leaders and hearing their stories, serving their churches\u2019 needs,\u00a0participating\u00a0in community outreach projects, and praying for the city.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One day, we\u00a0reorganized\u00a0the basement and\u00a0ripped an entire\u00a0pipe\u00a0organ out of a church\u00a0building\u00a0that needed more space. Other afternoons were spent passing out invites to a church\u00a0plant\u2019s Easter service\u00a0or offering personal care packages to unhoused people.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We went on lots of prayer walks and asked lots of questions.\u00a0It was such an\u00a0impactful week\u00a0as\u00a0we experienced the Lord\u2019s\u00a0work\u00a0and each considered\u00a0how He might be calling us to be part of it, whether now or in the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding the Need<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

On our second day of the trip, we walked the historic Freedom Trail while learning about the history of the Church in Boston. We ended\u00a0the tour\u00a0next to the\u00a0Boston Harbor \u2014 a powerful image of Habakkuk 2:14: \u201cFor the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.\u201d\u00a0This became my specific prayer for Boston throughout the trip\u00a0\u2014 that knowledge of God\u2019s glory would cover it like the waters of the harbor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Only about\u00a0two to three percent\u00a0of Bostonians identify as\u00a0evangelical Christians. This means that for every 100 people you pass on the sidewalk, two of them\u00a0<\/span>may\u00a0<\/span><\/i>have a personal, saving relationship with Christ.\u00a0This percentage is\u00a0similar to\u00a0those of\u00a0many\u00a0European and\u00a0Middle Eastern\u00a0countries, yet\u00a0Massachusetts\u00a0is only a handful of states away from Ohio\u00a0or\u00a0the Bible Belt.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Boston is\u00a0also\u00a0an incredibly diverse city, as\u00a0career\u00a0or university opportunities draw people from all over the world.\u00a0Transplants to the area can struggle to find community and meaning outside\u00a0of\u00a0material success.\u00a0Simultaneously,\u00a0many\u00a0Boston natives, or \u201ctownies,\u201d\u00a0are Catholic or have come from Catholic backgrounds but have been deeply hurt by their\u00a0churches.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The people of\u00a0this city\u00a0are\u00a0surrounded by darkness and\u00a0hungry\u00a0for true meaning in life.\u00a0They are searching for the knowledge of the glory of the Lord.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But friends, what\u00a0a work\u00a0the Lord is doing\u00a0here!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Fruitful Opportunities to Share God\u2019s Hope<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Throughout the trip,\u00a0we were bombarded with\u00a0abundant opportunities to plant seeds of hope in\u00a0the\u00a0hearts\u00a0of people we\u00a0encountered.\u00a0Striking\u00a0up conversations\u00a0with random people\u00a0at bus stops\u00a0or on park benches was intimidating, but time and again, I was blown away by their willingness to\u00a0open up\u00a0and tell us their stories.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It became so\u00a0evident\u00a0that many of these\u00a0people are desperate for\u00a0connection \u2014\u00a0for hope.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Often, these quick chats turned into much deeper conversations about where real hope is found.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One afternoon, another team member\u00a0and I ended up talking to a man near the Boston Public Library\u00a0for almost half an hour as he waited for a bus. He shared with us\u00a0that he was\u00a0looking\u00a0for a higher power to help him escape his alcohol addiction\u00a0but that he\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0find answers anywhere. We got to point him to the truth of the Gospel and even show him\u00a0how to access the Bible on his phone, which he was\u00a0very excited\u00a0about!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some other\u00a0friends on the team got to grab\u00a0lunch with a man who was homeless, and another even gave her personal Bible to someone eager to learn more about\u00a0this God who loved him so much.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Growth in the Boston Church<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

These were exciting and hopefully fruitful interactions.\u00a0But\u00a0all of\u00a0this outreach is essentially pointless without the\u00a0Church\u00a0\u2014\u00a0in order for\u00a0droplets to\u00a0cover the\u00a0sea, they must\u00a0join together.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Church in\u00a0Boston\u00a0has\u00a0exploded\u00a0in recent years, with many new\u00a0Bible-believing, Gospel-preaching\u00a0churches being planted or planned\u00a0as the Lord\u00a0moves in the city.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Community is essential for\u00a0effectively reaching\u00a0the lost\u00a0and for growth in spiritual maturity.\u00a0Whenever\u00a0we had Gospel conversations with unbelievers throughout the week, we got to point them to whichever church partner we were currently closest to, knowing that that community would love to continue planting seeds of truth in this\u00a0person\u2019s heart.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While this\u00a0church\u00a0growth is exciting, it also comes with challenges.\u00a0These churches are in\u00a0dire\u00a0need of mature, committed believers who will invest in their communities, devote themselves to their churches,\u00a0and disciple new believers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0was\u00a0reminded of Jesus\u2019 words to His disciples in\u00a0Matthew 9:37\u201338: \u201cThen he said to his disciples, \u2018The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;\u00a0therefore\u00a0pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Prayer for Boston<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Friends, would you join me in praying for the people of Boston?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pray that the Lord would send out laborers to\u00a0do Kingdom work in this city. Pray that mature believers would invest their time, talents, and treasures\u00a0into strengthening the Church.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, join me in echoing the prayer of Habakkuk 2:14: that the city of Boston would be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the\u00a0harbor.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What is it like to go on a mission trip in college?
