I\u2019ve\u00a0been\u00a0happily\u00a0<\/span>commuting\u00a0to Cedarville University<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for about three years\u00a0now. My parents, sisters,\u00a0and I live in Xenia, about 20 minutes away from\u00a0campus. Not only does commuting\u00a0save money, but it\u00a0allows\u00a0me to\u00a0spend time with\u00a0my family and friends\u00a0(and my pet cat,\u00a0TigerLily!)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

So,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0planning\u00a0to commute? That is exciting, and I\u00a0look forward\u00a0to meeting\u00a0you!\u00a0Maybe I\u2019m\u00a0a bit biased\u00a0since I run the unofficial\u00a0\u201cofficial\u201d\u00a0commuter org, but\u00a0I think you will enjoy commuting!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are five of the most important pearls of wisdom\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0collected from my time as a commuter\u00a0at\u00a0Cedarville.\u00a0I hope they will help you as you start commuting to campus!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pearl\u00a01: Parking as a Commuter\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2026\u00a0can be\u00a0difficult\u00a0but the feeling of triumph and victory as you take a prime but overlooked parking spot is unparalleled!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have certain\u00a0areas we are allowed to park in and certain areas we can\u2019t.\u00a0White lines around a parking spot\u00a0signify\u00a0student parking.\u00a0Yellow on white signs\u00a0that say\u00a0\u201ccommuter parking only\u201d\u00a0show\u00a0where you should park\u00a0as a commuter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Plan your parking timeline so you\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0rushing to get to class.\u00a0To get the best parking\u00a0in general,\u00a0especially\u00a0the limited spots\u00a0near my classes in the\u00a0Apple and Tyler\u00a0buildings,\u00a0I arrive\u00a020 minutes before my\u00a0course. This gives me time to\u00a0claim\u00a0a\u00a0nearby\u00a0parking spot\u00a0and\u00a0walk to my classroom.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Allow\u00a0wiggle room for\u00a0traffic delays.\u00a0If\u00a0your\u00a0first class is\u00a0at\u00a011 a.m.\u00a0or earlier,\u00a0<\/span>chapel<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(at 10 a.m.)\u00a0is mandatory.\u00a0Plan\u00a0to arrive\u00a0<\/span>very<\/span><\/i>\u00a0early\u00a0on chapel days with\u00a0prominent\u00a0speakers\u00a0or other big events\u00a0because parking becomes tricky.\u00a0Veterans Day\u00a0Chapel, Retirement Chapel, and\u00a0homecoming\u00a0weekend\u00a0are\u00a0days\u00a0you\u00a0want\u00a0to\u00a0arrive\u00a0earlier\u00a0than you usually do to avoid the stress of finding parking spots.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pearl 2:\u00a0Meal Plans\u00a0\u2014 Should You Scan?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

A meal plan is like a subscription to food for the semester.\u00a0There are different amounts of meals you can get depending on your meal scan.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>meal plan for commuters<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is called\u00a0\u201cBlock 120.\u201d\u00a0\u201cBlock\u201d\u00a0means you can scan multiple\u00a0times at once, and\u00a0\u201c120\u201d\u00a0means you get 120 meal\u00a0scans.\u00a0The benefit of this is\u00a0that you have\u00a0practically unlimited\u00a0meal scans and meals. The disadvantage is it expires at the end of each semester, so\u00a0any\u00a0unused food scans go to waste.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0option\u00a0is intrinsically tied to being a commuter:\u00a0<\/span>packing\u00a0your own lunch<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0Packing lunches can\u00a0save money\u00a0in the long run, money that can be used to\u00a0purchase\u00a0yummy\u00a0treats\u00a0at our campus coffee shop!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What I find to be a happy medium is the third\u00a0option:\u00a0<\/span>voluntary flex dollars<\/span><\/a>, money you purchase from Pioneer Catering, our food supplier, and that\u2019s put on your student ID. That way, you pay as you go and as you need.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s\u00a0what I do.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0on campus all day Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.\u00a0I keep an eye on my flex dollars,\u00a0and whenever\u00a0my balance\u00a0gets low, I purchase more.\u00a0Once a week, I\u00a0use flex\u00a0dollars to\u00a0treat myself out to lunch (usually at Panda Express). On the other two long days, I pack my lunch.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end,\u00a0what meal\u00a0option\u00a0you choose\u00a0is\u00a0up to you! Go with what fits your schedule\u00a0and your budget. Have fun with your food, whatever you do.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0packed\u00a0overnight oats\u00a0with\u00a0carrots\u00a0and guacamole. Is it strange? Maybe. But I like it!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pearl 3:\u00a0On\u00a0Friendships\u00a0as a Commuter<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

People\u00a0act\u00a0like\u00a0<\/span>commuting and friendships<\/span><\/a>\u00a0fit into a math\u00a0equation: commuting\u00a0= no\u00a0friends.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is\u00a0silly. Just like anyone on campus,\u00a0you\u00a0make friends with\u00a0your classmates,\u00a0the random people\u00a0you\u00a0talk to throughout the day, the girl you work with, and the\u00a0guy who\u00a0needs to borrow your ice scraper because an ice storm hit while you both were in classes\u00a0(true story).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0place to make friends is in the\u00a0commuter group chat on GroupMe.\u00a0We\u00a0try to have commuter events\u00a0once a month.\u00a0Our\u00a0monthly\u00a0commuter events are\u00a0varied but\u00a0always\u00a0build\u00a0community. Last semester, we had\u00a0a pumpkin-carving and s\u2019mores\u00a0night. Game nights are\u00a0a\u00a0crowd\u00a0favorite.\u00a0This March, we\u00a0went\u00a0to Dairy Station in Xenia for an ice cream social.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0also\u00a0share helpful bits of information like weather\u00a0issues,\u00a0traffic delays,\u00a0and\u00a0road conditions, and\u00a0we\u00a0can\u00a0relate to each other in ways\u00a0only\u00a0other\u00a0commuters\u00a0can!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Pearl 4:\u00a0On Group Projects\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of the biggest strengths\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0come to appreciate as a commuter is time management.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not on campus, my team and I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0procrastinate\u00a0until the\u00a0hour\u00a0before\u00a0our project is due. If we want to meet in person, we meet earlier in the days preceding the due date,\u00a0and our project is\u00a0submitted\u00a0comfortably\u00a0several hours\u00a0ahead of the deadline.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If someone suggests meeting at\u00a0nine\u00a0p.m.\u00a0for a group project and you leave campus at five\u00a0p.m.\u00a0(also true story),\u00a0offer an alternative\u00a0time\u00a0or\u00a0meet\u00a0virtually.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been\u00a0in\u00a0groups\u00a0where\u00a0those on campus\u00a0meet in person,\u00a0and I join via phone or video call.\u00a0They get to meet at the time they wanted, and\u00a0I get to\u00a0participate\u00a0without having to drive back and forth to campus again\u00a0\u2026\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a win-win!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most classmates are willing to be flexible with your schedule, so\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0be afraid to advocate for a solution that works for you!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Pearl 5:\u00a0Get\u00a0Involved\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2026 both on and off campus.\u00a0As much as there is to love about it,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0found the\u00a0hardest part about being a commuter\u00a0can be\u00a0the campus events.\u00a0Because many students are in classes all day, most events take place in the evenings after you might have planned to go home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even so, there\u00a0are\u00a0plenty of fun\u00a0<\/span>events on campus<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to go\u00a0to\u00a0if you are a night owl!\u00a0To stay up to date on event options, read the Daily Buzz.\u00a0The Daily Buzz is an email we receive every morning detailing events going on that day or major events coming up.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of these events,\u00a0ALT\u00a0Nights,\u00a0bring\u00a0fun\u00a0events\u00a0like mini-golf\u00a0or movie showings\u00a0onto campus\u00a0since most\u00a0students\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t\u00a0have a car.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Cedarville\u00a0also\u00a0has a bunch of\u00a0really fun\u00a0extracurricular\u00a0activities on campus you can get involved in if you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0mind driving back out!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And there is one\u00a0advantage\u00a0we\u00a0have\u00a0as commuters\u00a0that not everyone on campus has:\u00a0We have cars!\u00a0That means you can take your\u00a0campus-bound friends\u00a0out\u00a0of Cedarville and go to the movie theater in Beavercreek,\u00a0shopping at the Fairfield Mall,\u00a0or golfing at\u00a0Top Golf.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prefer to\u00a0food?\u00a0You could bring your friends to\u00a0brunch at one of the coffee shops in Xenia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Another great outing is taking\u00a0time to appreciate the falling leaves or the\u00a0greenery of spring\u00a0on a drive\u00a0out to Kairos Coffee in Wilmington, one of my personal favorites!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Commuting at Cedarville<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I had fun distilling my\u00a0commuting\u00a0experience down into five points, and I hope they are\u00a0helpful to you. Being a commuter is not something I would change for the world.\u00a0I enjoy commuting\u00a0at\u00a0Cedarville, and I think you\u00a0will\u00a0too!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
