Hello, my name is Abbey Patterson, and I am a middle childhood education major from London, Ohio. Before my freshman year at Cedarville, my parents and I sat down and had a heart-to-heart conversation about college life, and my parents advised that I live on campus rather than making the 30-minute commute every day. This was not my first choice, since I wanted to stay at home and avoid stepping too far out of my comfort zone. I did not fully agree with my parents’ advice in the moment, but I took it anyway, and I am so grateful that I did.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In my time at Cedarville,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0lived\u00a0in\u00a0Printy\u00a0and\u00a0Wood\u00a0Halls\u00a0and\u00a0have\u00a0had amazing experiences in both.\u00a0When\u00a0I was in Printy\u00a0for\u00a0my\u00a0freshman\u00a0and sophomore years, I found myself\u00a0living\u00a0with a community of girls who were\u00a0seeking\u00a0to create new relationships and lean on one another\u00a0while\u00a0striving to\u00a0grow\u00a0closer to the Lord. Printy was my first home away from home\u00a0here\u00a0at\u00a0Cedarville,\u00a0and\u00a0it\u00a0will hold a special place in my heart because of the way that community was created in everyday life.\u00a0The\u00a0same\u00a0kinds of\u00a0relationships and communities\u00a0are formed in all the dorms across campus in a multitude of ways. Below are\u00a0four\u00a0ways that I have personally experienced the creation of community within the dorms:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Hall Events<\/span> Turn Strangers Into Friends<\/span><\/h2>\n

Among all the dorms, halls and units are separated into bro-sis groups, where female halls or units get paired up with male halls or units.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0RAs\u00a0 of\u00a0the\u00a0bro-sis will plan events such as bro-sis brunch, pick-a-date, game nights, pickleball and sand volleyball events, movie nights, and more. Your bro-sis is\u00a0a great opportunity\u00a0to make friends of the opposite gender and get to know the people within your own dorm better. The RAs for each bro or sis group will also plan events that are\u00a0gender-specific. My RA last year had a Galentine\u2019s Day party where we all did crafts and had Bill\u2019s Donuts. This was such a sweet way to connect with the girls in my sis units during a time of the year when many are cooped up indoors because of the cold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

2. “Deck the Halls”<\/span> Creates Shared Traditions and Memories<\/span><\/h2>\n

Deck the Halls\u00a0is an event hosted by\u00a0<\/span>ResLife<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>where<\/span>\u00a0each\u00a0hall or\u00a0unit<\/span>\u00a0creates\u00a0a walkthrough\u00a0experience\u00a0for students to enjoy. My hall this year had\u00a0a\u00a0scary\u00a0nursing\u00a0home\u00a0theme. The girls in my hall\u00a0all\u00a0dressed up as elderly patients in a nursing home,\u00a0and as students walked through the hall,\u00a0the\u00a0girls\u00a0jumped out and scared them. Last school year, my unit in Printy created a Titanic-themed experience, and I played one of the Rose\u00a0characters. This event\u00a0happens\u00a0the last\u00a0Friday before\u00a0fall semester finals, so it is an amazing way to connect with the people you live with before you go on\u00a0break!\u00a0I\u00a0also\u00a0have walked through\u00a0other\u00a0dorm\u2019s\u00a0contributions\u00a0to this campuswide event with members of my bro-sis. This event builds\u00a0community\u00a0and\u00a0provides\u00a0a simple way\u00a0to\u00a0connect\u00a0with the people you are living with.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Dorm-Wide Events<\/span>\u00a0Bring the Whole Community Together<\/span><\/h2>\n

Along with\u00a0Deck\u00a0the Halls, every\u00a0dorm\u00a0hosts\u00a0events that are special to their community. One of the first dorm-wide events that occurs is\u00a0<\/span>Lawlorpalooza,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0which takes place\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0Wednesday\u00a0of\u00a0classes\u00a0in the fall. This event involves every set of bro units in Lawlor creating their own dance routine and competing against the other\u00a0units in a series of challenges and games. This event is open to the whole campus to watch, so it is\u00a0a great way\u00a0to start a friendship with someone in your hall by inviting them to attend with you.\u00a0Another example of a dorm-wide event\u00a0put on this year\u00a0was\u00a0my dorm\u2019s\u00a0late-night\u00a0waffle bar. The\u00a0Wood\u00a0RAs cooked waffles,\u00a0and the girls who lived in Wood Hall\u00a0enjoyed a night of waffles and\u00a0fellowship\u00a0together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Late-Night Food Runs Build Lasting Friendships<\/span><\/h2>\n

Imagine\u00a0going\u00a0through your\u00a0whole day\u00a0of classes, homework, extracurricular activities, and evening plans with friends. It gets to be about 9 p.m.,\u00a0and you begin to realize you are starving and bored. What do you do? Well, if you live\u00a0on\u00a0campus,\u00a0the answer is\u00a0probably taking\u00a0a\u00a0trip to\u00a0Taco Bell\u00a0or another open-late restaurant.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I still remember\u00a0my first experience\u00a0of\u00a0the college\u00a0tradition\u00a0of\u00a0late-night\u00a0feasts. Two girls in my\u00a0freshman-year\u00a0unit\u00a0knocked on my door and invited me on an adventure.\u00a0I was introduced to their whole group of friends, who have since become my friends. We had so much fun taking over 20 people into Taco Bell,\u00a0laughing\u00a0and getting to know each other\u00a0the whole time. It took forever to get our food, but no one noticed since we were all wrapped up in conversation. Late-night feasts do not\u00a0even\u00a0have to be off campus!\u00a0Girls in my hall this year\u00a0often\u00a0make\u00a0plans\u00a0to go to\u00a0<\/span>The Commons Express<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0get breadsticks and pizza.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These conversations and experiences with the girls I have lived with have deepened my understanding of them and\u00a0strengthened\u00a0our friendships. It is over these\u00a0<\/span>late-night\u00a0feasts that my walk with Christ has been strengthened, support has been given after a tough day, and lasting memories have been made.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Community Is What You Make It at Cedarville University<\/span><\/h2>\n

Throughout your time at Cedarville\u00a0University,\u00a0you will live with so many different people. My challenge\u00a0to\u00a0you is to try to build some sort of relationship with every person you live with. This could be the type of relationship where you spend every night together feasting, or it could\u00a0look\u00a0as simple as\u00a0short chats\u00a0when you see\u00a0them\u00a0outside\u00a0of the dorm. The choice is yours to make, but living in the dorm makes it\u00a0really easy\u00a0to find whatever\u00a0kind of\u00a0community you are looking for on campus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
