Getting Started Weekend is a crazy time! Students are moving into what will be their home for the next few years, and they are making a lot of other major adjustments as well. A lot of parents come along for the wild ride that is Getting Started, but they may not know what is available to them while they are on campus.

Downloading the Events @ CU app is a great first step! Once you have the app downloaded, search for the 2022 Getting Started Guide. This has a ton of information in it, including a schedule with locations of events, food truck options, helpful hints, and links. Here, parents can see what sessions and seminars are geared toward them and ways they can help their student adjust.

While parents are in Cedarville, they will need a place to stay. Check out these accommodations in the surrounding area! As far as food goes, Cedarville has invited several food trucks to be on location on both Friday and Saturday of Getting Started Weekend, including:

  • Claybourne Grill
  • Billie Gold Bubble Tea
  • Christian Brothers Meat Company
  • Church Street Cookies
  • Dougie Lee’s
  • El Buen Tacos
  • Pitabilities
  • Purely Sweet Bakery
  • Tortilla

Make sure you check the app for locations and which days these food trucks will be here! The village of Cedarville also offers a few food options: Colonial Pizza, Subway, Beans-N-Cream, Orion Coffee & Tea, Lola’s, and Mom & Dad’s Dairy Bar. The surrounding towns of Xenia, Springfield, and Beavercreek offer many other choices for sustenance as well.

Many parents stay through Saturday or Sunday of Getting Started, so they can cheer on their student at Jacket Jaunt on Saturday evening and worship together on Sunday morning. After that, all events are for the students.

Though transitioning from home to a new residence hall can be difficult, the sooner your student can start to adjust to college, the easier their transition will be! Treasure moments with your student but allow them to begin to reach out to their unit or hall mates. Familiar faces will help them when you eventually return home. The Parenting From a Distance session with Jeff Beste is a great way for you to learn how to support your student from afar. Your student can find sessions to attend also. Some of them are for parents and students, and some are for just students. I remember attending the Student Employment session with my roommate my freshman year.

However you choose to spend your Getting Started Weekend, find comfort in the fact that everyone is in the same boat as you. Everyone is making life adjustments! Encourage your student to build friendships, find ways to get involved (go to the Involvement Fair the first week of school!), learn where their classes are, and study hard. Cedarville is great, and you may find that the transition is easier than you think!
