Sometimes I can’t find the words to describe our recent GO trip to Guatemala because it was emotional in both sad and joyous ways. Sad because these people lack basic needs and resources that we have so readily available in the States. Joyous because I witnessed God move in amazing ways. Our clinic took place in a local school that graciously allowed us to serve the people of Guatemala.
We had several different stations in the clinic:
- One for our general providers (nursing students, nurses, and doctors) who assessed and diagnosed them
- One for vision screening, where eyeglasses were provided to people who have never been able to see clearly
- A chiropractic station, as many of their bodies are malnourished, and their musculoskeletal systems are greatly affected
- A “clinic of the soul” where our patients heard the love of Jesus from the Bible
- And a pharmacy where they would receive medications they needed based on their condition.
We gave all of the children an anti-parasite medication to keep them healthy despite poor hygiene and water quality. We provided multivitamins and over-the-counter medications that they do not have readily available. All of these services were free of charge to our patients.
The organization we served with is called Caring Partners International, and the founders, Adam and Rhonda Reed, are full-time missionaries who travel to Guatemala multiple times a year to continue the mission so these people are never forgotten. We served 651 Guatemalan people across four clinic days. We were able to provide medical care they desperately needed, medications to manage their health, and most importantly the Word of God for the health of their souls. Of those 651 people, 31 people decided to fully give their hearts to Christ in those days, and in the others, a seed of the love of Christ was planted in their hearts for God to nurture.
At the end of the trip, hugs were given, prayers were said, and the love of Christ shined bright. We helped spread the Word of God to people who needed to know or be reminded of the love Christ has for them. My life was changed through this trip just like those of the Guatemalan people. I am so thankful for a God that always provides.
