The School of Nursing undergraduate nursing program welcomed a record number of undergraduate nursing students in August. With returning and new students, we had 536 nursing majors starting the year. That creates a lot of energy and opportunities here on campus and in the community. We are so blessed with the clinical sites available to our students and the relationships we are building.

Some new initiatives to provide resources and assistance to our students include a couple of new positions. We have a compliance and student success advisor who works individually with students in early identification and intervention to facilitate academic success. She is also in charge of monitoring the compliance requirements for clinicals. The other position is a program advisor to assist with the student planning and registration; this is no small feat with more than 500 nursing majors. This team approach to advising is primarily to make sure there are multiple points of connection with students and more of their needs are addressed by their faculty advisor or other resources.

Other areas of growth include Interprofessional Education (IPE) opportunities as well as bolstering simulation across the curriculum. For the IPE, all junior students attended a one-day seminar along with pharmacy, allied health, athletic training, and psychology students. The Saline Training program was introduced to equip healthcare workers to be witnesses for Christ in their clinical setting. This was the third academic year for this IPE. Simulation is also growing in the School of Nursing, and is being used throughout the sophomore, junior, and senior nursing courses. On most days, visitors can observe students and faculty actively participating in a variety of patient scenarios in both moderate and high-fidelity simulation environments.

Our students are our greatest resource and we are thankful for each of them. They continue to amaze us with their passions and hearts for service. We have students actively involved in every possible way on campus as well as many who serve off campus. There are many student athletes majoring in nursing, leadership roles on campus, active on discipleship council and D-group leaders, to name a few. We are also thankful for the parents, alumni, and community partners who pray for and come alongside us as we educate the next generation of nurses.

Thank you for your partnership with the School of Nursing,

Suzanne Lefever
Assistant Dean, Director of Undergraduate Nursing
