2021-2022 B.S.N. Pinning Awards
The following Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates were recognized as part of the pinning ceremony held May 6, 2022.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Academic Achievement award is given to the student with the highest GPA and this year we honored not only one, but four students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 4.0: Kathryn De Vries, Makenzie Diedrich, Ashley Williams, and Annalynn Yerkey.
CHARACTER AWARD
The Character Award is given to the nursing student demonstrating excellence in character. This award reflects character in all interactions and endeavors including academic, co-curricular, and building into the community that is Cedarville University.
GERALD JOYCE
Gerald’s kindness and loving attitude always shines. He demonstrates respectfulness, integrity, and perseverance in his work. He has been an excellent role model for other students. He is consistently Christlike in his interactions, dependable, responsible, respectful, conscientious, caring, a strong leader for his cohort, and very humble. Gerald has always been prepared for class and led by example. He is a reflection of God’s character and daily lives out the school of nursing character qualities from 1 Peter.
MARIAH WESTON
Mariah lights up a room with her joy. She has a smile even in tough times. As president of AYO she leads her fellow dancers with joyful exuberance. She is conscientious about making right choices to represent Christ well.
Mariah seeks out those who are hurting or in need and offers to serve them as needed. She is a bright spot in people’s day. She consistently encourages people in her daily interactions. She seeks out feedback and advice, and genuinely listens and seeks to understand. She seeks to honor God in all that she does.
CHRISTIAN SERVICE AWARD
The Christian Service Award is given to the nursing student demonstrating excellence in service through ministry in the local church or community, involvement in campus ministry, or Global Outreach.
MITCHELL CARR
Mitch always goes out of his way to greet others and serve. He is on one of the worship bands at Cedarville and helps with organizing and implementing student events on campus. He has also continued to serve on the worship team at his local church throughout his days at Cedarville. Mitch is a man of faith, honesty and integrity. At the peak of the Covid cases here on campus, he sought opportunities to volunteer at UMS so that he could help their staff. He is always quick to volunteer for opportunities to serve his fellow classmates and others. His heart to serve others is apparent in all that he does.
MATTHEW SCHROLL
Matthew served on the Togo mission trip where his Christian service was on full display from helping care for the missionary kids, visiting local villages with the missionary to share Bible stories and also leading worship in a Wednesday night service with the missionary staff. Matthew also served with Heart-Song and regularly played in chapel. Matthew loves people and loves Jesus and this is demonstrated through his willingness to share hope, love and the gospel with those around him in everyday life and nursing.
CLINICAL PRACTICE AWARD
The Clinical Practice Award is given to the nursing student demonstrating excellence in clinical practice. The recipient is chosen based on feedback from clinical instructors throughout Junior and Senior year as well as preceptors.
LUKE NIEKIRK
Luke demonstrates a quiet confidence. He is willing to always go the extra mile for the staff, and his colleagues. Luke was always well prepared for clinical and demonstrated a great knowledge of his patient’s diagnoses and needs. He would also take the initiative to look things up if he did not know something without prompting from clinical faculty. He demonstrated expertise in clinical practice with the application of his skills and had a calm demeanor and humility.
TYLER REINHARD (not pictured)
Tyler works well with people of all ages and circumstances. He passionately pursues meeting even the most basic needs of patients while providing quality care with diligence. Tyler takes the time and genuinely cares about getting to know the life story of his patients. He is caring and compassionate, but always fun at the same time. One instructor says “thank you for deciding not to change your major in October.”
LEADERSHIP AWARD
The Leadership Award is given to the nursing student demonstrating excellence in leadership. The recipient has demonstrated leadership among their peers, by selflessly serving other nursing students and providing input into the School of Nursing as means of serving the profession, without taking credit for themselves.
KATHRYN DE VRIES
Kathryn leads her peers with compassion and humility. She served as the president of the Nursing honor society her senior year. Kathryn willingly serves and steps into the natural role of mentoring younger nursing students. She pursues excellence in all she does with gentleness and respect.
MAKENZIE DIEDRICH
Makenzie leads by example. She served as an officer with the Nursing Honor Society through her senior year. She is reliable and willing to help out her classmates in the clinical setting. Makenzie also was consistently stepping up to take more difficult or complex patients. The staff at the hospital regularly complimented Makenzie on her leadership skills. She demonstrates integrity, honesty, humility, and a clear focus that strategically helped her plan her day and she believes strongly in teamwork.
