In July I was invited to give two presentations at a conference at Montemorelos University in Mexico. I was joined by other scientists such as Drs. John Baumgardner, Leonard Brand, Art Chadwick,Raul Esperante and CU geology graduate Matt McLain. Conference participants came from all over Central America including Cuba, Venezuela, Columbia, Trinidad and Mexico. One of my presentations was on Grand Canyon Geology and the other was on sand injectites that I’ve worked on that are found at the base of the Coconino Sandstone in Arizona. The talks were well received despite the power going out (twice) during one of my presentations. During the middle of the conference, the ten geologists present led a field trip for 600 people into the spectacular Huasteca Canyon near Monterrey. We weren’t quite sure how 11 tour buses were going to make it up the narrow canyon road, let alone where all of the people would eat and have bathroom facilities. It all worked out without a hitch! In this narrow canyon vertical Cretaceous limestone and dolomite beds towered more than 1,000 m above our heads. In some sections of the canyon large anticlines and synclines were exposed on entire mountain sides.
