A timid freshman girl slowly made her way over to a door tucked into the wall of the lower Stevens Student Center. Her hand nervously grasped the door knob. Should she turn back? It wasn’t too late. She took a deep breath. She had told herself she would give it a try. She turned the handle. Little did she know that what awaited her inside would be life changing.

That girl was me, Madison Greathouse. That place was Resound Radio.

In one of my first classes freshman year, I was introduced to the on-campus radio station,  Resound. Our professor told all of the new Broadcasting Radio and Digital Media (BRDM) students what a great opportunity it would be for us to get involved with Resound. I shook my head. My focus of study wasn’t in radio! Why would l want to involve myself in the radio station?

After a couple of weeks of the professor’s encouragement, I decided to finally check out Resound. It didn’t take me long to realize how much the “little radio station on campus” had to offer. I was immediately welcomed into a newly formed video team, made up of gifted juniors and seniors following their passion for visual storytelling. There was a computer science major, two graphic designers, and a guy with an incredible vision for cinematography and sound.

It was in my first few projects with Resound that I began to realize my passion was for screenwriting. Before each video, we would all sit around in the conference room, throwing out ideas for storyline, structure, scenes, lines, etc. I absolutely loved it. Coming up with a concept and translating it into a story outline and script was riveting. (Interested in seeing some of our work? Click here!)

Maybe you aren’t interested in film .. .or radio or screenwriting! I still believe this applies to your time at Cedarville. First, understand that it is okay to be uncertain about exactly what you want to do with your life. Perhaps you want to delve into psychology, but you don’t know if you should be a biblical counselor or a case manager. Or maybe you love math, but you wonder whether engineering or business is the right fit for you. Cedarville has so many opportunities for you to discover and learn new areas that fit your gifts and talents. Make sure to take advantage of that!

Second, get out of your comfort zone! If you hear about an organization or opportunity on campus that is at least somewhat related to your field of study, check it out! I didn’t think Resound had anything to offer someone on the film and video track. I was so wrong! Joining the radio station actually helped show me where my talents lay and uncovered my passion for screenwriting!

I came to Cedarville knowing that I wanted to be involved in the film industry at some level, but I was unsure as to which area of film the Lord was leading me. While my classes were foundational in helping me funnel my focus, without my extracurricular experiences, it would have been much harder for me to come to a decision on which route to take.

One more thing — don’t forget to pray. God has a plan for you. He will open doors for you and close others. Follow the open doors! He will guide you through.
