At Cedarville University, we take missions very seriously, knowing that missions is a vital part of the Christian faith. If we have been saved by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we must not keep that good news to ourselves. We must live daily for Christ and dedicate each part of our lives to God and His work. This surrender can present itself in many forms, but missions is one that we must be more intentional about in our personal lives. It is so important that we don’t neglect our service to the Lord during our time as college students. But what exactly makes missions so important?
We should engage in missions during our time at Cedarville to participate in God’s commission for all believers, to get a glimpse of what God is doing across the world, and to start serving now!
To Participate in God’s Commission for All Believers
As Cedarville students, we are all acquainted with the Great Commission.
“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
How often do we find ourselves becoming apathetic to this call? This is a call that every single believer is commanded to take part in. We must not neglect participating in God’s mission of spreading the Gospel throughout the Earth. Obedience to His commands is key as we seek to serve Christ day by day. And part of this obedience is going. Because of what Christ has done and the unimaginable power that He has, we must go to share these truths with the world. There are numerous possibilities to live out God’s intentions for the Great Commission faithfully when we open our hearts to serve graciously and humbly for His glory!
To Get a Glimpse of What God Is Doing Across the World
As we participate in missions, we get glimpses of the bigger picture of what God is doing in the hearts and lives of those all over the globe. It can be easy to lose sight of those who live outside of your town, state, country, and continent, but God is working mightily in this world He created. We become so focused on ourselves or that which is right in front of us that we miss the bigger picture.
We must ask God to humble our hearts and open our eyes to the world that is outside of the familiar. The simple act of traveling a few hours down the road or even a couple days by plane can open your eyes drastically to how much larger God’s sovereignty and greatness is than we could ever comprehend.
To Start Serving NOW
College is a very busy time, but we cannot grow too busy for the Gospel. We must find ways to prioritize the mission of God within our lives now. There is no good excuse to wait, and there will never be a better time to start living for the Gospel. You do not need to graduate before you can start involving yourself in missions. Use your 1000 Days to magnify the Gospel. There is no time like the present to begin living on mission for Christ.
If short-term missions is something that you feel God is calling you to during your time at Cedarville, then consider going on a Global Outreach trip. Global Outreach offers dozens of trips every year during fall break, spring break, and summer break. Would you consider giving up one of your breaks to share the Gospel and serve believers and unbelievers around the world with some of your peers and Cedarville faculty and staff?
Another amazing option that you should consider is missions with your local church. Collaborate with your brothers and sisters of the local church to live in a Gospel-centered manner as you serve around the world and partner with the global Church to fulfill the Great Commission.
