Fun facts about Brazil:
- The Brazilian government implemented a new program in 2012 in which inmates can reduce their sentence up to 48 days per year. Read more about the program, Redemption through Reading, here!
- In the 1980s, the Criminal Enforcement Act was implemented. This initially meant that prisoners could earn time off for the number of days working a job🛠️ through the prison. In 2012, the Ministry of Justice of Brazil expanded this law to include compensating time served through study and reading books📖.
How the Gospel is Spread in Brazil:
Brazilian culture is filled with color🎉, dance💃🏽, music🎶, flavorful cuisine🍲, and perhaps most important, soccer⚽. Soccer, or football as Brazilians call it, is the most popular sport in Brazil and is considered the country’s most significant socio-cultural activity. This vibrant culture may give the impression that missions is unnecessary, however, over 52% of the population identify as Roman Catholics, and over 16 million Brazilians live in unsustainable situations. These people need to hear the hope of the Gospel.
Ministries like Project Compassion use soccer to reach young people in Aglomerado da Serra, the largest favela (slum) in Belo Horizonte. Project Compassion delivers a message of hope in Jesus Christ, and these Christian soccer teams use sports as a platform to preach the Gospel.
Another way Christians are using soccer as a form of evangelism is through the Christian Football World Cup🏆which highlights the growing intersection of sports and spirituality in the country. This tournament seeks to bring together teams from around the globe that share a common religious conviction, fostering unity and fellowship through soccer.
