Services and apps free to use and download often come with unknown risk.
“Freemium is a combination of the words “free” and “premium” used to describe a business model that offers both free and premium services. The freemium business model works by offering simple and basic services for free for the user to try and then adds more advanced or additional features at a premium.” – CPO Magazine
“Freemium” scams are a widespread business model that withhold a part of a product or service from users unless a payment is made. However, users are not typically aware that a payment is required, as some parts of an app are free, there’s a free trial, or the download is free. These are common ways for dishonest companies and scammers to make money off of vulnerable users. Users are often targeted through:
- Deceptive marketing and predatory subscription models.
- No notification that a “free trial” ended.
- No refunds.
- Extreme prices for a service.
- Vague and difficult cancellation policies and terms of service.
To avoid these types of scams, keep in mind the following:
- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- If a free trial requires credit card or banking information, it’s not really free.
- If you aren’t willing to pay the price for any service offered, don’t use it.
- Check what services are allowed under the ‘free’ plan.
- Research about the service to learn other people’s experiences.
- Read the Terms of Service for any free trials.
